As artificial intelligence reshapes the workplace, business leaders and HR professionals face a critical strategic decision: invest in reskilling their existing workforce for internal mobility or opt for external hiring and automation. This choice carries significant implications for investment, time, career progression, and organizational agility, according to research from Talenbrium and Success Knocks.
While 71% of HR leaders identify reskilling as their primary response to AI's impact, only 18% have actually costed out such initiatives, as reported by Talenbrium's Q1 2026 Pulse Survey. This gap highlights a common challenge in workforce transformation efforts, where recognizing the need for change often outpaces the execution of effective strategies.
High-performing firms, however, demonstrate a clear investment pattern, allocating $2–$3 on workforce capability for every $1 spent on AI tooling, according to Success Knocks. This suggests that the most successful organizations view workforce development as a complementary, rather than competing, investment alongside AI implementation.
